Damn it must be nice to live in your own alternate universe.
Although what they did was awful, you have to understand that these men have been living in a bubble for months, even years. They have had these men shooting at them constantly, trying to kill them. They've been mentally pounded into thinking this is the ultimate evil. It takes a lot of adrenaline and blinkering to de-humanise someone enough to be able to kill them. A better warrior would perhaps not have done this, but these are young front-line soldiers caught in a moment of extreme rage and savagery. Abhorrent, of course, but that is war.
